To our Pirates,
I wanted to take a moment to reach out to you and try and offer as much insight into some of the things that have transpired in the past few weeks. First and foremost, I can't imagine what each of you must have gone through as you learned the news that the Spring season was postponed and then ultimately cancelled. This has all been unprecedented, and we are all adapting to a "new normal." What is important to know, however, is that we are all in this together.
Before I get into what we know regarding your eligibility, I want you to know that the Athletics staff has continued to work on ways to support you through the rest of this semester and into the next academic year. We are looking to provide support to all of our athletes from an academic standpoint, eligibility, athletic training and sports information. We will be launching a section of our Pirate Athletics website dedicated to connecting you to those resources. Over time, you will find resources for online learning, schedules for counseling and eligibility appointments, athletic training resources and more. We are dedicated to provide you as much support as we can as you continue your academic and athletic endeavors here at OCC and beyond.
In terms of what we currently know regarding this season and the eligibility status of spring sport student-athletes, the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) has stated that any student-athletes in good standing, as of March 12, will have their season of competition restored. This decision is in-line with what the NAIA and NCAA has done. There aren't many details beyond that at this point as the CCCAA continues to have discussions surrounding the eligibility conversation, but as more details are available we will be sure and share them with you.
In the meantime, good luck next week as classes resume on Monday and please be sure and use the resources that are being provided to you. While we may not be on campus, we are still here for you so feel free to reach out with any questions you may have.
