Carlson, Powell propel Pirates past Vikings

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College Baseball team made it six wins in a row to start the 2012 season on Friday, courtesy of an 8-2 victory over visiting Long Beach City College.
Sophomore Chris Carlson slugged a three-run home run and finished the afternoon 3-for-4 with one run scored and four RBI to lead the Pirates. Freshman Boog Powell added three hits, two runs and a stolen base and freshman Zach Nehrir contributed with a 2-for-4, one-run, two-RBI afternoon.
That was more than enough offensive support for the Pirate pitching staff, which, for the third day in a row, shut down the Vikings (1-3) throughout the day. Sophomore starter Keegan Yuhl improved to 2-0 after two runs (both unearned) on six hits with a walk and five strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings. Reliever Ryan Evans notched his second save of the year by holding the Vikings to no runs, no hits, two walks and three strikeouts over the final 3 1/3 innings.
Omar Jimenez (0-1) took the loss for LBCC after allowing six runs (five earned) on six hits with six walks over 4 1/3 innings of work.
