Cougars snap OCC's win streak

COSTA MESA -- For the second year in a row, the College of the Canyons baseball team gave Orange Coast College's "W" flag the afternoon off for the first time all season, courtesy of a 4-1 loss on Saturday at Wendell Pickens Field.

Last year, OCC was 14-0 before falling to the Cougars, 11-6, at COC on Feb. 27, 2011.

Cougars' starter Cody Jones improved to 3-0 with eight impressive innings of work, with a fastball hovering around 93-95 mph all afternoon, the sophomore held Coast to just one run on two hits with one walk and 10 strikeouts.

In fact, only leadoff Boog Powell managed to pick up any offensive success for the Pirates (13-1-1), thanks to a pair of infield singles. He scored Coast's lone run in the first when he stole home on a double-steal attempt with teammate Bijan Rademacher. No other player made it to second base the entire game.

Sophomore lefty Eric Salcido (1-1) took the loss, despite a solid performance of his own. He allowed three runs on five hits with two walks and six strikeouts over six-plus innings.

Coast held onto that 1-0 lead through five innings before a two-run home run by Kevin Lenik in the top of the sixth gave the Cougars (6-3-1) the lead for good. RBI hits by Drew Sandler and Christian Ornelas gave Canyons some extra breathing room, but it would not be necessary as Jones kept the OCC bats quiet throughout the afternoon.
