Pirates remain unbeaten with 3-2 win over Palomar

COSTA MESA -- Chris Carlson did not want to have "hit into triple play" as his lone memory on Tuesday. Instead, the sophomore left-fielder followed up his dubious at-bat with a pair of run-scoring doubles, lifting the Orange Coast College baseball team to a 3-2 win over visiting Palomar in a nonconference showdown between two of the top teams in Southern California.
Justin Broussard continued his hot hitting from the bottom of the batting order, collecting two hits and scoring twice -- both on Carlson's doubles -- for OCC (7-0-1). Eilert Meyers also collected two hits and drove in a run for the Pirates.
Jed Vandernaald came in relief of starter Dallas Draviczki and improved his record to 3-0. He went 4 1/3 innings and allowed no runs on two hits with no walks and four strikeouts.
In the first, OCC had runners on first and second with nobody out and a full count on Carlson. With the runners going, Carlson lined a shot right to Comet shortstop Reggie Jones. With both runners already at their next base it was a simple formality to retire both of them to end the threat with the triple play.
But Coast answered back and picked up single runs in the second and third innings. In the second, Trent Woodward walked, advanced to second on a balk and scored on an RBI-single to center by Meyers. In the third, Broussard doubled to left-center, advanced to third on a grounder by Boog Powell and scored two batters later on a double-to left-center by Carlson.
Draviczki threw four solid innings before getting into trouble in the fifth when a dropped ball on a double-steal led to a pair of unearned runs, courtesy of a two-run single by Chris Sanders, tying the game at 2.
But the Pirates answered right back in the fifth when Broussard led off with a single, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Powell, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a two-out, RBI double by Carlson, putting Coast up for good.
