Pirates earn third straight sweep; improve to 10-0-1

PALM DESERT -- The Orange Coast College baseball team continued its unbeaten streak to start the 2012 season after sweeping past the College of the Desert last weekend to improve to 10-0-1 overall.

After taking the opener, 4-0 on Thursday, the Pirates rolled to a 10-2 win on Friday before wrapping the series up with an 8-4 win on Saturday.

In Friday's win, Boog Powell continued to spark the offense from the top of the order, going 3-for-5 with three runs and an RBI. Joel Licon, Chris Carlson and Bijan Rademacher each had a hit and combined for seven RBI.

Starter Keegan Yuhl improved to 3-0 after allowing just two runs on four hits over six innings of work. The sophomore righty walked three and struck out seven. Relievers Ryan Evans, Jimmy Grob and Tyler Mitchell each pitched scoreless frames to close things out.

On Saturday, the Pirates overcame a sloppy defensive effort (eight errors) and used multi-hit performances from Powell (2-for-4, two runs), Licon (2-for-3, one run, one RBI), Carlson (2-for-4), Justin Broussard (2-for-3, one run) and Ben Agredano (2-for-2) to complete the sweep.

After a rough start to the season, lefty Eric Salcido continued his upward swing with his second straight quality start. The sophomore earned his first win of the year, allowing no runs on three hits over six innings of work. He walked three and struck out four with 10 ground-outs.
