Coast routs Southwestern, 13-1

COSTA MESA -- There would be no ties this time.

Thanks to three four-run innings and another strong effort from the pitching staff, the Orange Coast College baseball team cruised to a 13-1 nonconference win against visiting Southwestern College on Friday at Wendell Pickens Field.

It was the same two teams that battled to a 3-3 14-inning tie back on Feb. 11 at Southwestern College, but on Friday, the results were MUCH different.

After falling behind 1-0 in the top of the second, the Pirates (13-0-1) grabbed the lead away from the Jaguars (6-4-1) and never gave it back, scoring four runs in the third and four more in the fourth to blow the game wide open.

In the third, used an RBI-single by Boog Powell, a two-run single by Chris Carlson and took advantage of three Jaguar errors to grab a 4-1 lead.

The fun continued in the fourth when another RBI-single by Carlson was followed up with a two-run single by Bijan Rademacher and the rout was on.

That was more than enough offense for sophomore righty Keegan Yuhl (4-0), who allowed one unearned run over six innings, walking two and striking out two. Dallas Draviczki followed up with six straight outs over the next two innings and Jimmy Grob finished up the win with a scoreless ninth.

Powell finished the afternoon 3-for-3 with three runs and three RBI, while Carlson went 4-for-5 with two runs and four RBI and Rademacher added a hit and three RBI in four at-bats.

It's a shame that February is the shortest month of the year because over the past two Februarys, the Pirates have dominated the competition, going 27-1-1, with 20 wins against top-20 opponents (7-0-1 this year).
