Pirates open OEC with 12-4 win over Chargers

COSTA MESA -- A trio of four-run innings helped propel the Orange Coast College baseball team to a convincing 12-4 win over visiting Cypress College on Thursday in the Orange Empire Conference opener for both teams.

It was another team-wide performance that helped propel the Pirates to their 14th win in 16 games (14-1-1, 1-0 in OEC). Spearheading the offensive outburst, once again, was leadoff hitter Boog Powell, who added three hits, two runs and three RBI to his freshman season. The Mission Viejo HS grad already has posted 36 hits in 69 at-bats (.521 batting average) with 25 runs and 11 RBI through just 16 games.

Others who added to the OCC offense were Joel Licon (2-for-4, one run, two RBI), Justin Broussard (2-for-3, one run, one RBI), Blake Hugaert (2-for-4, two runs, one RBI), and Ben Agredano (1-for-4, one run, two RBI).

That was plenty of support for the stingy Pirate pitching staff, led by freshman righty Brandon Brennan, who won his state-best fifth straight to start the season. He allowed two runs (both earned) on four hits with two walks and four strikeouts over seven innings.

Cypress (10-3, 0-1) fell behind 8-1 through five innings, but managed to put a scare into the Pirates late in the game. After scoring a run in the seventh, the Chargers added two more in the eighth and had two runners on base before reliever Josh Evans ended the threat by retiring Robert Chavarria on a ground out.

OCC quickly responded with four more runs in the eighth to regain control of the game. RBI-hits by Broussard, Hugaert, Powell and Licon highlighted the Pirate eighth and reliever Eric Salcido allowed just one hit in a scoreless ninth to end the game.
