Pirates roll past Monarchs 9-1 to advance to Super Regionals

COSTA MESA -- There would be no heart-stopping drama on Sunday at Wendell Pickens Field as the Orange Coast College baseball team cruised to a 9-1 win over L.A. Valley in Game 2 of the 2012 Southern California Regional Playoffs.

With the win, the top-seeded Pirates (33-4-1) eliminate the 16th-seeded Monarchs (20-19) and will advance and host next week's Southern California Super Regionals. It is the fifth trip to the Super Regionals in six years for the Pirates. OCC will take on Cypress in the second game of the Day 1 doubleheader, beginning at 2 p.m. Mt. San Antonio will play Glendale in the opener, beginning at 11 a.m.

"It was a nice way to respond to the late-inning drama we had on Saturday," OCC head coach John Altobelli said. "Our pitchers were dominant and the offense made some adjustments and had better approaches at the plate. All in all, it was the kind of game we wanted."

Brandon Brennan (10-1) threw eight strong innings for Coast, allowing just one run (unearned) on six hits with no walks and five strikeouts. Bijan Rademacher threw a 1-2-3 ninth inning to wrap things up.

At the plate, Stefan Sabol led the charge for the Pirates, going 3-for-4 with a double, home run, two runs scored and four RBI, while Joel Licon added solo home run as part of his three-hit, three run day. Bijan Rademacher also notched three hits and scored twice, while Bryan Garza and Eilert Meyers (two hits) each scored a run and drove in a run for OCC.

After L.A. Valley tied the game at 1 after four innings, the Pirates answered back in the top of the fifth. RBIs by Sabol and Meyers, combined with a pair of run-scoring wild pitches gave Coast a 5-1 advantage and the Pirates never looked back.

A solo home run by Licon and a sacrifice fly by Garza make it 7-1 in the sixth before Sabol's two-run shot in the eighth -- his second of the season -- closed out the scoring.
