COSTA MESA -- There was far less drama for the Orange Coast College women's volleyball team this time around against Golden West as the Pirates swept past the rival Rustlers, 25-18, 25-18, 25-22, on Friday night in an Orange Empire Conference matchup inside the Peterson Gym.
Unlike the first matchup between the two clubs on Sept. 26 -- a 25-20, 19-25, 17-25, 25-16, 16-14 marathon win for OCC -- Coast (18-4, 9-3 in conference) topped the Rustlers (4-13, 2-10) in just over an hour to maintain their second-place slot in the conference standings.
Madison Holmes led the Rustlers with 11 kills, while Holly Hennessey and Abigail Botana each added seven.
Both teams went back and forth in the early portion of the opening set, Coast pulled away with a 9-3 run to grab a 16-10 lead. Herder ripped three kills during that run as the Pirates took care of business the rest of the way to grab the opening set.
Golden West came out strong in the second set and grabbed a 12-8 advantage, but OCC regrouped and ripped off 10 straight points to grab an 18-12 advantage. Libero Rylee Adair showed off her array of serves and baffled the Rustlers throughout that run as the Pirates jumped out to a two-set advantage.
Both teams battled throughout most of the third set with OCC holding on to a 20-19 advantage. A pair of GWC errors and a key block by Herder pushed the Pirates' lead up to 23-19 and despite a mini run by GWC, Coast iced the match with a kill by Evelyn Awai.
The Pirates will return to action on Wednesday at Fullerton College before returning to the Peterson Gym on Friday night against Santa Ana, beginning at 6 p.m.
