HUNTINGTON BEACH -- The Orange Coast College women's cross country team earned a solid fourth-place team finish at the 2018 Golden West Invitational, which took place on Friday at Central Park.
Led by another strong finish from freshman standout Meagan Silves, the Pirates earned a team score of 107, trailing only Saddleback (29), Riverside (63), and Chaffey (91) in the 11-team invitational.
In a race that covered just over three miles, it became a three-runner sprint to the finish between Silves, Saddleback's Alexis Park and Chaffey's Elena Estrada and in the end, it was Park, who broke the tape first with a winning time of 20 minutes, 2.3 seconds. Silves finished second at 20:04.8, while Estrada ended up third (20:07.9) in the 107-runner field.
The next four runners who earned points for the Pirates all cracked the top-40 in the field, including Jackie Ojeda (21:29.1), Sarahi Terrones (22:02.9), Angelie Jaimes (22:20.1) and Valeria Rodriguez (22:23.6). Other solid Coast times were turned in by Valerie Valentin (23:42.8) and Yuridia Perez (25:11.5).
Coast will return to action on Friday, Oct. 5 at the Brubaker Invitational, located at Irvine Park in Orange, beginning at 9 a.m.
