Pirates improve, earn third place tie

RIVERSIDE -- The strokes were trimmed down for the Orange Coast College men's golf team as the Pirates earned a third-place tie with Riverside City College at Monday's Orange Empire Conference match at Victoria Country Club.

The Pirates and Tigers each finished with team scores of 2-over-par, trailing first-place College of the Desert (-13) and Victor Valley (-7). Just behind the Pirates and Tigers were Cypress College (+5), Cuyamaca (+14), Mt. San Antonio (+20) and Mt. San Jacinto (+39).

After a couple of weeks on inconsistent play, the Pirates picked up a solid, all-around effort with all six golfers within six shots of one another.

Yuto Tsukui and Giovani Fontana each shot 1-under-par 71s to lead the way for OCC. Tsukui collected four birdies and just three bogeys for his round, while Fontana used an eagle-birdie combo to highlight a back-nine score of 3-under, 34 after a 2-over, 37 on the front-nine.

Nic Borelli carded a 1-over-par, 73 for the Pirates, with Nate Beckner (75), Nico Flemer (76) and Brenden Barker (77) all earning top-quality scores for Coast.

OCC will return to action on Monday at Bear Valley Country Club for the next OEC event, hosted by Victor Valley College, beginning at 9 a.m.
