Pirates split races at Collins Cup
NEWPORT BEACH -- It was an all-around successful morning of competition for the Orange Coast College women's crew as the Pirates split a pair of races against UC Irvine at the 2025 Collins Cup.
The opening race featured the Women's Novice 8 with OCC going up against a pair of boats from UC Irvine. OCC's one boat cruised by both of UCI's boats and earned an open-water victory with a time of 7:39.43, over 18 seconds faster than UCI "A" (7:57.51) and over a minute faster than UCI "B" (8:45.27). OCC's novice boat featured Serena Cordeiro, Saelah Pescevic, Kathryn Henry, Morgan Welch, Irais Jaime, Klara Kettler, Sylva Pinedijan, Katelyn De Rosas and Margrett Thai (coxswain).
In the Varsity 8 race, the Pirate eight of Megan Iida, Katherine Drechsler, Ivory Yohn, Maddie Garner, Madyson Fitch, Paige Hasegawa, Tori Hink, Maysa Garcia Sanchez and coxswain Kaylee Beaumont took on an Anteater boat that topped the Pirates by 18 seconds in their previous race. On Saturday, the two boats were side by side at the 1,200-meter mark before UCI finally pulled ahead for good with a winning time of 7:02.36. Coast trimmed 13 seconds off of the UCI win and finished second with a time of 7:07.33.
Up next for the Pirates will be a trip to Sacramento for the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Championships, April 25-27, with the ACRA National Championships set for Nashville, TN May 14-18.
