Pirates prevail over Ventura in playoff opener
COSTA MESA -- In the battle of Pirates vs. Pirates, it was the Orange Coast College Pirates prevailing over the Ventura College Pirates, 5-1, on Tuesday, in the opening round of the Southern California Regional Playoffs at the OCC Tennis Complex.
With the win, the No. 2-seeded OCC Pirates (21-1) will take on the winner of the matchup between San Diego City and Santa Barbara City in the second round, which will take place on Tuesday at 2 p.m. at OCC.
Things started strong for OCC, thanks to a 2-1 lead after the doubles portion of the match. Coast picked up wins by the dynamic duos of Mebuki Kitakuni/Kaylee Ho (8-3) and Chantel Kamel/Ava Bocek (8-6).
With six singles matches needed for three more wins, Coast took care of business after straight-set wins at No. 1 by Kitakuni (6-0, 6-2), at No. 2 by Ho (6-2, 6-1) and at No. 4 by Bocek (6-3, 6-2), ending the rest of the matches while still in progress.
