Pirates take of business with wins over Hawks, Dons
HUNTINGTON BEACH -- While it wasn't "beach weather" on Friday at the Newland Courts, it was "winning weather" for the Orange Coast College beach volleyball team, who collected a pair of 5-0 wins over visiting Santiago Canyon College and Santa Ana College.
The Pirates (7-2), picked up straight-set wins in all of their matchups. Against the Hawks, Coast picked up wins from Jordan Packer/Kayla Ihrig (21-12, 21-8), Madison Hopkins/Nika Safavi (21-12, 25-230 and Sophia Wirtzer/Camryn Hayek (21-5, 21-9). OCC won the other two points off the Hawks by way of forfeit.
Against the Dons, it was more of the same, with straight-set wins coming from Packer/Ihrig (21-1, 21-6), Hopkins/Safavi (21-19, 21-16), Wirtzer/Hayek (21-2, 21-9) and Reagan Anderson/Ashlyn Couch (21-14, 21-8). The fifth match was won by Coast on forfeit.
The Pirates will head up to Riverside on Friday to take on the host Tigers and Saddleback College, beginning at 10 a.m.
