Three top-3 finishes for Pirate men at WIRAs
SACRAMENTO -- It was a VERY impressive performance from the Orange Coast College men's crew as the two-year Pirates took on the top four-year programs in the region and earned a pair of wins at the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Regional Championships this past weekend.
OCC's novice boats went a perfect 2-for-2 in their grand final events. The Second Novice 8 came into WIRA as the favorites and the final result proved as much as they earned an open-water win with a time of 6 minutes, 32.652 seconds, nearly 10 seconds ahead of runner-up UCLA's time of 6:42.039.
The battle of the event took place in the Novice 8 race, where Coast lead early, then, fell behind to rival UCLA in the final 500 meters. But just then, the Pirate boat found another gear and used an amazing final push in the last 30 seconds to pass the Bruins' boat and win gold with a time of 6:08.404, with the Bruins taking second at 6:09.445.
In the Varsity 8 race, there were several top boats with plenty of "favorites" to go around. In the end, the top four boats finished within four seconds of one another, with the Pirates taking third overall with a time of 5:55.432, just behind Division I powers, Santa Clara (5:53.002) and University of San Diego (5:54.497). Just behind OCC was UCLA (5:56.944), Washington State (6:00.019) and UC Davis (6:03.707).
OCC's Second Varsity 8 showed the Pirates' depth up and down the roster, earning a spot into their Grand Final race, where they finished fifth overall with a time of 6:16.711.
Up next for the Pirates will be the ACRA National Championships, in Nashville, Tennessee, set for May 14-18.
