Coast Varsity 8 tops Chapman in season opener
NEWPORT HARBOR -- Under overcast skies on the Newport Harbor, the Orange Coast College women's crew opened its 2013 season on Saturday morning with three races against USC and Chapman and the Pirates performed well.
In the main event -- the women's Varsity 8 race, the Pirates jumped out in front and never looked back, winning the 2,000-meter race with a time of 7 minutes, 6 seconds. OCC's JV squad finished second at 7:35, while Chapman University placed third with a time of 8:03.
In the women's Novice 8, it was a matchup between the Pirates and the USC Trojans. In the end, the Trojans edged out the hosts with a time of 6:59.1, while the Pirates clocked in at 7:02.3
In the second Novice 8 matchup, USC won with a time of 7:45.5, while the Pirates were close behind, taking second with a time of 7:54.
It will be a fun weekend of competition this weekend for the Pirates as they host the 2013 Berg Cup on Saturday, beginning at 7 a.m. The OCC men will host the 2013 Newport Regatta on Sunday at 7 a.m.
