Pirates open season with strong win over Cougars

SAN LUIS OBISPO -- The Orange Coast College baseball team opened the 2013 season with a 7-1 nonconference road win over Cuesta College on Friday afternoon.

Manny Argomaniz went 2-for-4 with a run scored and three RBI to lead the Pirates. Cody Bruder added two hits and two runs scored from atop the Coast lineup, while Ricky Navarro, Danny Jimenez and Zach Nehrir each added two hits in an 11-hit opener.

That offensive support was more than enough for the Pirate pitching staff, which held the Cougars to just one run on six hits. Despite allowing six walks, OCC's defense picked up the slack in an errorless performance.

Starter Evan Porcella threw five strong innings for the win, allowing no runs on four hits. The relief duo of Brian Bass and Garrett Hartwell combined to allow just one run on two hits with a pair of strikeouts the rest of the way.

The Pirates and Cougars will wrap up their three-game series with a double-header on Saturday, beginning at 11 a.m. at Cuesta College.
