Coast wins third straight with 3-2 win over Rustlers
HUNTINGTON BEACH -- The Orange Coast College baseball team picked up some extra-inning success on Saturday, beating Golden West, 3-2 in 10 innings at Fred Hoover Field.
With the score tied at 1 heading into the 10th, OCC (17-6, 5-3 in Orange Empire Conference) picked up a pair of two-out hits to take a 3-1 lead. Ricky Navarro singled to lead off the frame and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Manny Argomaniz. Austin Saenz popped out, but Danny Jimenez picked up his teammate with a two-out RBI-double, scoring Navarro. Anthony Virgen followed with an RBI-single to score Jimenez, giving Coast a 3-1 lead.
That extra run in the 10th was needed as the Rustlers (10-11, 3-5) would not go down without a fight.
With two on and one out, Andrew Yazada used a fly ball to center to score a run to make it 3-2.
After a hit batter put runners on first and third, reliever David Wilson finally ended the game by striking out Nicolas Mars to pick up his second save of the season.
Kyle Dowdy pitched 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief to pick up the win and improve to 2-1. He allowed two hits, one walk and three strikeouts.
Starter Joe Reta threw well, allowing just one run on five hits with no walks and four strikeouts over the first five innings. Jacob Hill also provided a strong effort, allowing no runs on one hit with a walk and a strikeout over 1 2/3 innings.
Coast got on the scoreboard first when Virgen reached with a two-out single and scored on an RBI-triple by Cody Bruder (2-for-4).
An RBI-single by Frank Califano tied the game for the Rustlers in the bottom of the third, ending the scoring for both teams until the 10th inning.
The Pirates will return to action on Tuesday at home against the Rustlers, beginning at 2 p.m.
