Pirates rout Chaffey for first win of the season

COSTA MESA -- A collective sigh of relief came from the Orange Coast College baseball team following the conclusion of Saturday's 21-9 nonconference win over visiting Chaffey College at John Altobelli Park.

With that first win of the season now officially in the books, the Pirates will continue for more smiles and positivity after Coast's largest run-scoring output since beating College of the Desert, 23-1, back on Feb. 20, 2020.

Five different Pirates -- Alan Choo, Zach Boynton, Gibson Rath, Jake Haruki and Ryan Farias -- each scored three runs. Boynton and Rath each and Andrew Chorbagian each drove in three runs, while Farias led the way with four RBI.

Coast came to life early with nine runs over the first two innings of play ane never looked back. OCC tacked on three runs in the fifth and sixth innings before blowing the game wide open with a pair of three-run home runs in the bottom of the seventh, courtesy of Chorbagian and Farias.

Bret Nelsen picked up the win in relief for the Pirates with two scoreless, hitless innings of work.

Coast will return to action on Tuesday at Long Beach City College (1 p.m.) before kicking off a three-game series at John Altobelli Park against Cuesta College, beginning on Thursday at 1 p.m.
