Pirate comeback falls short to Comets

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College baseball team made things interesting late, but came up short to visiting Palomar College as the Pirates fell to the Comets, 12-7, on Thursday afternoon at John Altobelli Park.

The Pirates (0-4) used some strong starting pitching by Jake Martinez to battle the unbeaten Comets (3-0) to a 4-4 draw through the first four innings.

But Palomar found its offensive stroke in the middle innings, scoring six runs in the fifth and solo runs in the sixth and seventh innings to pull ahead, 12-4.

Coast countered in the bottom of the eighth with three runs, thanks to a two-run single by Tyler Covington and a sacrifice fly by Alan Choo to pull to within five at 12-7.

Comet pitching missed enough bats down the stretch to keep the Pirates at bay the rest of the game. Palomar's four hurlers combined for 14 strikeouts.

Covington finished 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI, while Zach Boynton went 2-for-4 with two RBI.

For the Comets, Braedon Peterson-Cheek went 4-for-6 with a run scored and an RBI, while Mike Rodda added three hits, a run and two RBI. AJ Klubeck and Cody Cappelletti combined for four hits, three runs and three RBI.

Coast will return to John Altobelli Park on Saturday to face Chaffey College, beginning at 12 p.m.
