Pirates battle elements at Coast Classic
COSTA MESA -- It was a cold, windy, nasty Friday for the 2025 Coast Classic, but the Orange Coast College men's track and field team overcame the elements and posted the top two-year team score with 166 points.
Santa Monica City College was second with 56 points, followed by Long Beach (54), Fullerton (30), Saddleback (29), Pasadena (28), Santa Barbara (20.50), Cuyamaca (16.50), Golden West (14), Allan Hancock (13) and Compton (1).
Among several top performers for Friday's meet was runner/thrower Brendan Clark, who earned a pair of first-place marks for the Pirates. In the 400, he spearheaded a 1-2 finish, winning the race with a time of 49.88, just ahead of OCC teammate Deuce Frierson (50.53). Clark then found himself atop the leaderboard in the javelin throw with a toss of 158-feet, 4-inches, with Frierson taking second again with a mark of 146-0.
Distance runner Chance Callinan topped the field in the 3,000 steeplechase with a winning time of 10:01.95, over 12 seconds ahead of SMCC's Alberto Bravo's runner-up time of 10:14.12.
Other top-3 performances for the Pirates included Josaiah Meggs in the 100 (2nd, 11.18), Caden Guardino in the 3,000 (2nd, 8:59.93), Jeremiah Wiley in the high jump (5-10 3/4), Alijah Ratliff in the triple jump (2nd, 39-4 3/4), Sean Artest in the hammer throw (156-9) and discus throw (3rd, 120-7), Josh Miller in the 110 hurdles (3rd, 23.11), Frierson in the 200 (3rd, 23.11), Mark Lutke in the hammer throw (3rd, 149-10), the 4x100 relay (3rd, 44.26) and 4x400 relay (3rd, 3:31.39).
The weather forecasts look much better the rest of this week as the Pirates head up to Pasadena for the PCC Invitational on Friday, beginning at 9 a.m.
