Pirates come out strong in 2025
LONG BEACH -- The Orange Coast College women's track and field team put forth a strong performance at the South Coast Conference Opener, hosted by Long Beach City College, on Saturday, with the Pirates placing second overall with 150 points.
Coast earned several top-three times and distances, including a pair of first-place marks in the 1,500 meters and in the shot put.
In the 1,500, OCC sophomore Liberty Miller took on several top runners and left them in the dust, cruising to a 12-second victory in the event with a time of 4 minutes, 54.03 seconds, well ahead of Mt. San Antonio's Ava Cornell, who took runner-up with a 5:06.84.
Fellow Pirate, Abigail Gavrilovic, earned the top mark in the shot put, where the Pirate sophomore earned a distance of 39-feet, 1/2-inch, well clear of Cerritos' Mackinzie Monson's throw of 36-3 1/2.
Gavrilovic, last year's state runner-up in the hammer throw, picked up where she left off with a runner-up throw on Saturday of 153-5. She also picked up a second-place throw in the discus with a mark of 119-4.
Miller joined the OCC trio of Luna Centeno, Mariana Hernandez and Belle Baker to earn a runner-up time of 12:47.42 in the 4000 distance medley relay.
Sara Chupinsky earned a second-place jump in the high jump at 4'9 and also finished third in the triple jump with a 32-6 1/2.
Ana Chupinsky also earned silver in the 300 hurdles with a time of 49.5.
In the 150-meter dash, it was Chloe Guerena who took the silver for OCC with a time of 18.87.
Third-place performances were turned in by Kiarah Palacio in the pole vault (10-0) and Kendall Chrisman in the javelin (84-11).
The Pirates will return to action on Saturday at the Cerritos College Opener, beginning at 10 a.m.
