Eight top spots earned for Pirates at Cerritos Opener
CERRITOS -- There was plenty of hardware to go around for the Orange Coast College women's track and field team as the Pirates earned eight first-place times and marks during Saturday's Cerritos College Opener.
Both of OCC's relay teams took home the top time and both came right down to the tape. In the 4x100 relay, the foursome of Alyssa Bowman, Jasmin Trujillo, Kiarah Palacio and Chloe Guerena edged out the foursome from Cerritos College by .01 of a second, taking first overall with a time of 49.35 seconds.
Guerena, Trujillo, Bowman and Ana Chupinsky duplicated the photo-finish win in the 4x400 relay with a time of 4:06.29, just ahead of the Falcons' runner-up time of 4:09.38.
Another bang-bang finish occurred in the 400 hurdles, where Ana Chupinsky edged out Cerritos' Kailah Usi at the wire with a winning time of 1:08.41, just .03 seconds ahead of Usi's 1:08.44.
It was a 1-2 finish for the Pirates in the 3,000, where Luna Centeno earned the top time of 11:19.97, followed by teammate Mariana Hernandez, who clocked in with a 11:57.1.
It was also a 1-2 OCC finish in the 1,500, where Liberty Miller captured first with a time of 4:50.84, followed by Centeno's runner-up time of 5:06.1.
Guerena turned up the pace and left the field in the dust in the 200, taking first with a time of 25.96.
The field events had Kiarah Palacio earn a pair of top marks, winning both the high jump (4-feet, 7-inches) and the pole vault (8-0 1/2).
Sara Chupinsky took the top spot in the triple jump (32-11 1/4), followed closely behind her sister, Ana Chupinsky, who jumped 32-9 for second place.
Other top-three performances from the Pirates came from Sara Chupinsky in the 60 hurdles (2nd, 9.9), Trujillo in the 400 (2nd, 57.98), Kylie Valerio in the shot put (2nd, 35-0 1/4; 3rd in discus, 109-6), Sara Chupinsky in the long jump (3rd, 16-6 1/2), Katrina Loether in the hammer throw (3rd, 117-1) and Kendall Chrisman in the javelin (3rd, 86-11).
The Pirates will play host to this year's Orange Empire Conference Invitational, which takes place on Friday, beginning at 10 a.m.
