Pirates sweep past Dons, Tigers
IRVINE -- It was a fabulous Friday for the Orange Coast College beach volleyball team as the Pirates earned a pair of 5-0 Orange Empire Conference wins over Riverside City College and Santa Ana College at the Great Park.
In the win over the Dons, OCC (7-5 overall) was led by the duos of Kayla Ihrig/Sophie Vienna (21-12, 21-8), Nika Safavi/Brynn Bisher (21-8, 21-12), Ella Hardstaff/Lola Fernstein (21-6, 21-5) and Dezi Butler/Joey Payan (21-15, 21-13). Coast's No. 5 match was won via forfeit.
It was more of the same for the Pirates over the Tigers. Straight-set wins were turned in by Ihrig/Vienna (21-7, 21-5), Hardstaff/Fernstein (21-15, 21-7), Butler/Payan (21-18, 21-13) and Mikaela Lucas/Anjali Clinton (21-16, 21-18). The No. 2 doubles duo of Safavi/Bisher needed a third set to settle their match, winning 21-17, 12-21, 15-7.
Coast will return to action on Friday at Saddleback College, when they take on the host Bobcats and Cypress College, beginning at 10 a.m.
