Pirates win a pair at IVC
IRVINE -- It was a successful Friday of beach volleyball for Orange Coast College, as the Pirates rolled to a 5-0 win over Fullerton and followed that up with a 4-1 win over host Irvine Valley, to pick up a pair of Orange Empire Conference wins at IVC.
Against the shorthanded Hornets, Coast cruised to four straight-set wins, which were turned in by Kayla Ihrig/Sophie Vienna (21-8, 21-6), Nika Safavi/Brynn Bisher (21-11, 21-8), Lola Fernsten/Ella Hardstaff (21-10, 21-7) and Dezi Butler/JoeyPayan (21-6, 21-3). The No. 5 pairs were won by way of forfeit.
In the second match of the day against the Lasers, OCC (10-7, 7-2 in the OEC), picked up four more straight-set wins, courtesy of Irhrig/Vienna (21-10, 21-10), Safavi/Bisher (21-16, 21-19), Butler/Payan (21-18, 21-15) and Sanampreet Samra/Mikhaela Lucas (21-17, 21-15).
With the two wins, the Pirates are now just one match behind Golden West (8-1) for first place in the Orange Empire Conference with four contests remaining.
OCC will travel to the Rancho Valley Volleyball Club for a pair of OEC contests against Santa Ana and host Riverside, beginning at 10 a.m. The Pirates and Rustlers will wrap up the regular season at GWC on Friday, April 17, beginning at 10 a.m.
