Santos helps set the pace for Pirates at State Meet
WALNUT -- Orange Coast College men's track and field standout, Josh Santos, made quite a first-year impression, earning a spot in two events at the 3C2A Track and Field State Championships on Saturday at Mt. San Antonio College.
Santos, a sprinter and jumper specialist out of Northwood HS, earned a fourth-place spot on the podium in the long jump with a jump of 23-feet, 1/2-inch. After a solid 22-5 1/4 on his opening attempt, Santos bettered his first jump with his best jump of the meet with his 23-0 1/2. His fifth jump nearly equaled his best with a jump of 23-0 before passing on his sixth and final attempt. A silver medal at the Orange Empire Conference championships in the long jump (23-0 3/4), followed by a bronze medal at the SoCal Regional Meet (23-3 1/2) earned Santos his spot in the State Championships, where he more than held his own against the top jumpers in the state.
But Santos wasn't done there. He helped anchor the Pirates' 4x100 relay team. The foursome of Santos, Sean McEwen, Hayden Espinoza and Andrew Dunlap earned a spot in the state finals and finished sixth in the state with a time of 43.39 seconds.
OCC's lane assignment in state was earned after finishing third in the SoCal Finals (41.34) and earning a bronze at the OEC Finals (41.87).
