Pirates perform well in season opener
COSTA MESA -- It was home sweet home for the Orange Coast College women's track and field team as several Pirate competitors kicked off 2026 strong at the OCC Opener on Friday at the Jim McIlwain Track and Field Complex.
In a competition that featured both two- and four-year colleges, Ana Chupinsky topped them all in the 400-meter hurdles, crossing the finish like first with a time of 1 minute, 8.7 seconds. She also joined Ava Alvarez, Sara Chupinsky and Jasmin Trujillo in the 4x100 relay and helped the Pirates place first with a time of 50.9.
That same Pirate foursome also finished second overall in the 4x400 relay with a time of 4:11.57.
Trujillo earned herself a first-place performance in the 400, crossing the finish line first with a time of 58.51. She also earned a runner-up finish in the 200 with a time of 26.15.
In the 800, Isabel Ramirez earned the fastest time among both flights of runners, taking first place with a time of 2:33.52.
Other top-3 performances include a pair of runner-up marks by Sara Chupinsky in the high jump (4-feet, 11-inches) and long jump (16-10) as well as Jocelyn Alba in the 1,500 (3rd, 5:12.58).
The next competition for the Pirates will take place up at Moorpark College on Friday, beginning at 9 a.m.
