Pirates have solid opening week at OEC Prelims

RIVERSIDE -- The Orange Coast College women's track and field team had themselves a solid opening day of competition at prelims of the 2026 Orange Empire Conference Track and Field Championships on Friday at Riverside City College.

Through seven events, the Pirates are in second place with 49 points, behind only host RCC (108) and ahead of Saddleback (36), Golden West (6) and Fullerton (1).

One of the highlights from Friday's meet was the performance of freshman distance runner, Jocelyn Alba, who earned the silver medal in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 42 minutes, 28.78 seconds. Mariana Hernandez finished fourth in the event at 43.26.36, with teammate Belle Baker right behind Hernandez in fifth place at 43.57.1.

Coast earned 12 points in the pole vault, with Paige Hasegawa earning the silver medal with a jump of 8-feet, 0 1/2 inch, with teammate Mina Murata finishing fourth at 6-6 3/4.

In the long jump, the Pirates had a pair of point-earners with Sara Chupinsky earning the bronze medal with a jump of 17-4 1/4 and Nikki Witana placing sixth with a jump of 15-11.
