Coast's season ends with five-game loss to L.A. Pierce

WOODLAND HILLS -- The Orange Coast College women's volleyball team put a big-time scare into the No. 1-seeded L.A. Pierce Brahmas, but in the end, the upset bid came up just short as the Pirates lost in five games on Saturday night in the second round of the Southern California Regional Playoffs.

Karlee Riggs led the offense with 19 kills and added 11 digs on defense but it wasn't enough as the Pirates fell, 25-18, 21-25, 19-25, 25-23, 15-8. It was the first time all season that the undefeated Brahmas (29-0) even went to a fifth game, giving OCC (17-5) a very small level of satisfaction.

Up 2-1 in games, Coast had the chance for the knockout, but Danyetta Boynkin (20 kills) and setter Janelle Futch (56 assists) helped keep the match alive with a 25-23 win in Game 4, forcing a deciding fifth game.

Andi Frisina anchored the OCC defense with 15 digs, while setter Allison Lumsden dished out 38 assists.

With a freshman-heavy lineup, the sky is the limit for next year's Pirate program. Riggs finished the season with 375 kills, good for seventh place on OCC's single-season kills list. Lumsden's 758 assists is eighth-best all time for one season as well.
