Pirates cruise past Bobcats in tourney opener

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College women's water polo team overcame the early-morning 8 a.m. start time and rolled to a 14-4 nonconference win over Saddleback College on Friday on Day 1 of the Orange Coast College Women's Water Polo Tournament.

Several OCC players found the back of the net, with Hayden Clark leading the way with three goals. Layla Vargas added two goals for Coast (3-2), while Gracie Duquette, Elizabeth Liskey, Yaneth Gonzalez Luna, Emma Willis, Tatum Rodgers, Finley Munchoff, Evalyn Galeana, Alyssa Zettlemoyer and Ariah Martinez each scored once.

The Pirate defense did a strong job of limiting any sort of run by the Bobcats (2-3) as they kept the guests off of the scoreboard for nearly three full quarters of action. After a Sophia Banua 6-on-5 goal trimmed OCC's lead to 2-1, the Pirates ripped off nine goals in a row before an early Bobcat tally in the fourth quarter ended the drought.

OCC goalie Savannah Pena had eight saves in the win, while Saddleback's Megan Parsley earned six saves.

Tournament play continues for the Pirates this afternoon as the Pirates take on Long Beach at 12:20 p.m. On Saturday, Coast will host Riverside at 8 a.m., followed by Santa Barbara at 11:15 a.m.
