Coast conquers conference crown
COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College women's water polo team set the tone early and outlasted Riverside City College, 19-15, in the championship game of the Orange Empire Conference Women's Water Polo Championships on Saturday at the OCC Aquatics Pavilion.
In a matchup between the top two teams in the OEC, Coast (24-8) set the tone early with four straight goals over the opening two minutes, putting the Pirates up for good.
Riverside (21-9) hung tough with the Pirates and played them evenly the rest of the match, but that early OCC lead was never relinquished, giving the Pirates the conference title.
Coast was led by the 1-2 punch of Emma Willis and Finley Munchoff. Willis had four goals, seven assists, while Munchoff added four goals and six assists. Brooke Kaltenbach contributed four goals and one assist, while Hayden Clark tossed in four goals and added a steal.
In goal, Savannah Pena made the big stops when she needed to and finished with eight saves to earn the win for the Pirates.
For the Tigers, last year's conference champion, Angelina Beall led the way with five goals, while Yosra Elseifi added four goals and four steals.
Coast will now head south to Southwestern College for the Southern California Regional Championships, where they will take on the opening round winner between Palomar College and Cuesta College on Friday, beginning at 6:45 p.m.
