Pirates come out strong, topple Bobcats

COSTA MESA -- Another strong start, another positive result for the Orange Coast College women's water polo team as the Pirates rolled to a 17-9 Orange Empire Conference win over visiting Saddleback on Wednesday inside the OCC Aquatics Pavilion.

The Pirates (11-5, 3-0 in the OEC), outscored the Bobcats (8-8, 1-1) in the first half, 10-3, allowing for a smooth-sailing second half and a convincing home win.

Emma Willis led the Pirates with five goals and two assists, while Finley Munchoff added four goals, two assists and three steals. Hayden Clark tossed in three goals and collected two steals, while Ariah Martinez contributed a pair of goals and an assist.

In goal, Savannah Pena was solid for the Pirates, collecting nine saves.

OCC's halftime lead of 10-3 grew to 12-3 early in the third with goals from Willis and Munchoff. Saddleback answered with three straight goals to trim the lead to 12-6, but would be as close as the guests would get.

The Pirates will head up to Ventura College for a weekend tournament, beginning on Saturday.
