Pirates go 3-1 at Long Beach tourney

LONG BEACH -- The Orange Coast College women's water polo team continued its strong play with three wins in four contests this past weekend at the Long Beach City College Women's Water Polo Tournament.

Coast (17-6), the state's No. 3-ranked team, opened the tourney with wins over No. 9 Cerritos, 14-7 and Palomar, 16-5. In the win over the Falcons, OCC pulled away early with the first nine goals of the game and from there, it was smooth sailing for the Pirates.

Hayden Clark had four goals for Coast, while Brooke Kaltenbach added three goals and an assist. Tatum Rogers and Yaneth Gonzalez Luna each scored a pair of goals, while in goal, Savannah Pena earned the with with 11 saves.

Another key run fueled OCC's win over Palomar as a 6-0 Pirate run turned an 8-4 halftime lead into a rout. Kaltenbach and Finley Munchoff each had three goals for Coast, while Ariah Martinez, Layla Vargas and Emma Willis each scored twice. Pena was a shot-stopping machine with 16 big saves against the Comets.

The fun continued on Saturday for the Pirates as they won their 13th straight with a solid 15-7 win over West Valley. A 7-0 OCC run in the middle portion of the contest proved to be too much for the Vikings to overcome. Munchoff led the way with three goals, while Kaltenbach, Vargas, Willis and Clark each scored two. Pena notched eight saves for the Pirate win.

The winning streak came to an end on Saturday afternoon, thanks to a 13-6 win over the state's No. 1-ranked LBCC Vikings. Willis had a strong game for Coast with two goals and three assists, while Munchoff added a goal and two assists.

Coast returns to action on Wednesday at Golden West College, beginning at 2:15 p.m.
