Pirates take 3-of-4 in Riverside
RIVERSIDE -- After an early loss to Santa Barbara, the Orange Coast College women's water polo team ripped off three straight wins to cap off a successful weekend at the Riverside City College Tournament this past Friday and Saturday.
Coast (7-5) bounced back from the 15-10 setback to the Vaqueros on Friday with a 22-1 rout of Rio Hondo in the afternoon contest. OCC found the back of the net early and often, jumping out to a 13-0 lead after the opening quarter, cruising to victory the rest of the way.
The offense was spread around, with Kedra Escarzaga, Taryn Mallon, Finley Munchoff and Hayden Clark each scoring three goals, while Gracie Duquette, Emma Steffens, Tatum Rodgers and Alyssa Zettlemoyer each scored twice.
The fun continued for the Pirates in the Saturday morning matchup with San Joaquin Delta, thanks to a 22-7 win over the Mustangs.
Another strong start fueled the Pirates as they jumped out in front 11-1 in the first half and never looked back. Mallon and Ariah Martinez each scored three goals for Coast, while Clark, Zettlemoyer, Escarzaga, Emma Willis and Yaneth Gonzalez Luna each scored twice.
In the tourney finale against Crafton Hills, Coast rolled to a 17-4 win, with Duquette and Layla Vargas each scoring three times, while Escarzaga, Munchoff, Rodgers and Clark each scored twice.
OCC's goalie, Savannah Pena racked up three wins and 34 saves in all four games for the Pirates.
Coast will kick off Orange Empire Conference play at Fullerton College on Wednesday, beginning at 1 p.m. OCC's next home contest will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 1 against Riverside, beginning at 2:15 p.m.
